Combined Pill

The combined pill contains synthetic versions of progesterone and oestrogen, mimicking the hormones your body naturally produces. These hormones prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg each month, as well as thickening the mucus in the neck of the womb so it’s harder for sperm to gain access and thinning the lining of the womb so there’s less chance of a fertilised egg implanting. Oestrogen can cause blood pressure to rise so it’s really important that you have regular check-ups while on the pill – many pharmacies can actually do this for you if you can’t get to see your GP. We offer a broad range of combined pills and we recommend that you order based on the pill you’ve previously been prescribed by your GP.

Side Effects of Combined Pills

Before you buy combined pills online, it’s important to be aware of the potential side effects. Combined contraceptive pills contain both oestrogen and progesterone and some women may be affected by these hormones more than others. There are low dose pills such as Loestrin 20 which contain lower amounts of oestrogen when compared with the regular combined pill. These low dose pills means that the oestrogen-related side effects are usually reduced which may be more suitable for some.

The side effects of the combined pill may include:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Increase in blood pressure
  • Breast tenderness
  • Spotting or breakthrough bleeding.

 Awareness of Sexually Transmitted Illnesses

It is important to stress that although contraceptive pills can be effective at preventing pregnancies, they do not protect you against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). If you have had unprotected sex you may be at risk from STIs and it is advisable to have a check at your local GUM clinic.
